'About Japan' webinar series 248: Robotics Market in Japan

How can EU SMEs tap into the opportunities within the robotics market?

FROM EU-Japan Centre for Industrial Cooperation - Brussels Office:

Japan’s robotics market, known for its technological advancements and precision manufacturing, presents significant opportunities for European companies. As a global leader in industrial robotics, Japan offers a dynamic market driven by its ageing population, labour shortages, and increasing demand for automation across sectors such as manufacturing and agriculture.

Japan has established supportive frameworks to foster the advancement of industrial robotics, such as the Robot Revolution Initiative, promoting collaboration among academia, industry, and government. An industry report projects the market to expand from USD 1.23 billion in 2022 to USD 3.15 billion by 2032.

EU SMEs specialising in cutting-edge technologies such as AI, IoT integration, and collaborative robots could expand the range of options available to Japanese end users, complementing the country’s existing strengths. Opportunities also lie in supplying components and software solutions, especially in areas like sensor technology and robotics software.

While competition is intense, the growing adoption of robotics in non-traditional sectors offers untapped potential, paving the way for innovative opportunities.

Navigating Japan’s market requires understanding its unique regulatory environment and building strong local partnerships.

Several EU companies have entered the Japanese market, such as Universal Robots A/S, a Danish manufacturer of collaborative robots, which distributes its products through a network of local partners.
